About Matt

Bespoke Tattoo artist based in Kensington, London, specialising in fine line, black and grey, and realism Tattoos.

With over 16 years of experience, Matt Roe is known for his precision, attention to detail, and a private, one-to-one Studio experience.

His work is defined by precision, detail, and a strong artistic direction, creating tattoos that are both technically refined and visually distinctive.

Matt collaborates closely with each client, translating individual ideas into original, long-lasting pieces designed to sit naturally on the body.

The studio environment is designed to feel calm, private, and professional, with a strong focus on hygiene, comfort, and overall experience from start to finish.

Intro to Tattoo artist Matt Roe

Alongside Tattooing, Matt's work extends into fine art and sculpture. These pieces explore form, detail, and classical influence, shaping a wider body of work beyond the Studio.

Tattooed Sculptures

Matt Roe's sculptural work explores the intersection of classical art and contemporary tattooing. Each piece is built around hand-customised busts, where traditional forms are reinterpreted through layered mark-making, symbolism, and fine detail. Drawing from Greek mythology and art history, the work reflects a signature approach that blends precision, narrative, and a modern visual language, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces that sit between sculpture and tattoo.

Corinthia Hotel — Permanent Display

Matt Roe's sculptural works are on permanent display at Corinthia London within Kerridge's Bar & Grill by Tom Kerridge. Positioned among works by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Damien Hirst, the installation places Roe's contemporary pieces within a wider context of established fine art. The residency reflects an ongoing relationship with the space, where his work contributes to the curated visual identity of the restaurant.

Red Eight Gallery — Bank

Roe's work has been exhibited at Red Eight Gallery in the City of London, presented alongside influential contemporary artists including Banksy, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Damien Hirst. The exhibition positioned his sculptural work within a recognised gallery setting, highlighting the crossover between tattoo culture and fine art.

The Other House — Private Viewing

A private gallery viewing of Roe's work was held at The Other House, offering an intimate setting for clients and collectors to experience the sculptures in person. The event focused on the detail, craftsmanship, and narrative behind each piece, reinforcing the work's place within a more curated, design-led environment.

Matt Roe's commissioned artwork on display at Synmax's London headquarters

Synmax Commission — London HQ

Roe was commissioned to create an original artwork for Synmax, installed within their London headquarters in Victoria. The piece was designed to sit within a corporate environment while maintaining the detail, balance, and visual identity that defines his wider body of work.

Collaborations

Collaborations span across brands, creatives, and private commissions. Each project is approached with the same level of detail and intent, creating work that sits between Tattooing, art, and design.

Sonos — Merchandise

In collaboration with Sonos, Roe developed a limited run of branded merchandise, including embroidered sweatshirts, caps, and t-shirts. The collection translated elements of his visual style into wearable pieces, combining clean design with subtle references to his tattoo and sculptural work.

Corinthia × Tom Kerridge — Apollo Spritz

As part of his ongoing collaboration with the Corinthia, Roe worked with Tom Kerridge to develop a drink inspired by his artwork, the Apollo Spritz. The cocktail became a best-seller within the restaurant, with Roe contributing to the overall art direction, including the creation of custom orange peel branding stamps that reflected the visual language of the sculptures on display.

Serge Denimes — Capsule Collection

Roe collaborated with Serge Denimes, founded by Oliver Proudlock, to create a limited edition capsule collection. The project featured nine designs inspired by both current and past tattoo work, forming a cohesive graphic series that sold out on release.

Sonos — One-Off Artwork

Roe created a one-of-one artwork for Sonos, hand-painting a set of Sonos Ace headphones alongside a Venus sculpture. The piece was developed as a standalone artwork and displayed at Sonos' Santa Barbara headquarters, combining classical references with contemporary product design.

Advice

General Tattoo FAQ

+ Does a tattoo hurt?

Pain levels vary depending on placement, size, and the individual. Some areas are more sensitive than others, though most clients find the experience very manageable and often I tattoo first timers for a full day. My tattoo style is quite delicate so tends not to be as painful as many other style techniques. Most clients are surprised at how little it hurts.

+ I can't decide what I want tattooed. Any ideas?

First, you should make sure I am the right artist for you. I specialise in black and grey tattooing and have a particular style that you'll be able to recognise if you look at my previous work. I try not to choose design subjects for my clients, but try to create an artistic representation of your ideas or themes using my signature style. I work using a clients brief which can either stem from an idea, an image or a more detailed plan.

+ Who should not get a tattoo?

It is not advisable to get a tattoo if your immune system is compromised in any way, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have severe allergies, if you have a communicable disease, if you are taking certain medications such as blood thinners or if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. You must also be over the age of 18, this is still the case regardless of parental consent.

+ How long does a tattoo take to heal?

Most tattoos heal on the surface within 2–3 weeks, though full healing beneath the skin can take longer. Following the recommended aftercare is important for the best result.

+ How should I prepare for my tattoo appointment?

Make sure you are well rested, hydrated, and have eaten beforehand. Avoid alcohol the day before your appointment and wear comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed.

+ Do fine line tattoos fade?

All tattoos naturally soften over time. Fine line tattoos require a balanced approach to ensure they heal cleanly and age well, which is considered throughout the design process.

+ Can I exercise after getting tattooed?

It is recommended to avoid intense exercise for the first 3–4 days, while the second skin protective barrier is on. This is particularly important if the tattoo is in an area affected by movement or friction.

+ Can I drink alcohol before or after getting tattooed?

Alcohol should be avoided before your appointment as it can increase bleeding and affect the tattooing process. It is also best avoided immediately after being tattooed during the early healing stage.

+ How long should I leave second skin on for?

This can vary depending on the tattoo and healing process, though second skin is generally left on for around 3–4 days unless advised otherwise.

+ What should I wear to my appointment?

Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed. It's best to wear loose clothing that doesn't pinch the skin or leave marks. Dark clothing is recommended where possible.

+ Can I get tattooed in the sun or before a holiday?

Fresh tattoos should be kept out of direct sunlight and avoided before swimming holidays where possible. Healing tattoos require clean, controlled aftercare conditions.

+ How old do I need to be to get tattooed?

You must be 18 or over with valid photographic ID.

+ Do tattoos age over time?

All tattoos naturally soften slightly over time. Placement, skin quality, sun exposure, and design all contribute to how a tattoo ages.

Studio & Booking Tattoo FAQ

+ How do I book with Matt Roe?

All bookings are made through the enquiry form on this website. Once submitted, your idea, placement, and sizing will be reviewed before a booking recommendation is made.

+ What is the minimum booking?

Most work is booked with a minimum of a half day session. Smaller pieces can be booked during selected Tiny Graze dates.

+ What are Tiny Graze sessions?

Tiny Graze sessions are selected dates dedicated to smaller tattoos, fine line pieces, and minimal designs, with a minimum charge of £250. Tiny Graze tattoos are quoted individually by the piece.

+ Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes. A non-refundable deposit is required to secure all bookings. £200 for regular tattoo appointments and £100 for Tiny Graze appointments.

+ Can I reschedule my appointment?

Appointments can be rescheduled with a minimum of two weeks' notice. Changes made within this period will require a new deposit to secure another booking.

+ Do I see the design before my appointment?

Designs are generally prepared close to the appointment date, allowing the work to be tailored specifically to the final placement and flow of the body. Matt can send over a line drawn design at the beginning of the week of the appointment — this will also give enough time for any alterations to be made if needed. Final position, size and small details can be tweaked on the day to make sure you are 100% happy with the outcome.

+ Do you offer consultations?

Yes, I do offer consultations if you feel you'd like to have a face to face chat about your ideas. Most of the time the whole process can be completed via email but with more complex ideas I would recommend a consultation or if you'd just like to meet and check out the place before you confirm.

+ Do you only tattoo in black and grey?

Matt primarily specialises in black and grey tattooing, fine line work, and stylised realism.

+ Where is the studio located?

The studio is based in Kensington, London, UK.

+ Is the studio private?

Yes. The studio operates on a private, appointment-only basis, creating a calm and focused one-to-one environment.

+ Do you offer out of hours sessions?

Out of hours and fast track sessions are available on request for clients looking to bypass waiting lists or closed books.

+ How long is the waiting list?

Waiting times vary throughout the year depending on availability and project scale.

+ Can you tattoo over scars?

In some cases, yes. This depends on the age, texture, and condition of the scar tissue and is assessed individually.

+ Do you tattoo hands, necks, or faces?

This is considered on a case-by-case basis depending on the project and existing coverage.

+ Can I use numbing cream?

Numbing products are not generally recommended unless discussed in advance prior to the appointment.

+ Can I bring friends to my appointment?

In order to maintain a focused and efficient environment, I prefer that clients do not bring additional guests to their tattoo sessions.

However, I do recognise that some individuals may genuinely feel more comfortable with a trusted friend present. If you believe that having a friend by your side will enhance your experience, I kindly request that you limit it to only one accompanying friend.

First Tattoo Guide

A video series created to answer some of the most common questions people have before getting tattooed. Across 11 short episodes, Matt Roe talks through the process in a clear and approachable way, covering everything from preparation and placement to healing, pain, and long-term considerations. Designed for both first-time clients and those looking for a better understanding of the tattoo experience.

Aftercare Guidance

Your tattoo will be protected with a medical grade second skin dressing to support clean, comfortable healing with minimal maintenance. Proper aftercare is essential to ensure the best possible healed result.

Second Skin Healing

Keep the second skin applied for 3 to 4 days following your appointment.

You may shower as normal during this time, however avoid:

• Baths
• Swimming
• Saunas or steam rooms
• Heavy exercise causing excessive sweating
• Direct sun exposure

It is completely normal to see fluid, plasma or excess pigment build beneath the film during the first few days. This is part of the natural healing process.

If the dressing begins to lift significantly, leak, or becomes uncomfortable, remove it earlier and follow the guidance below.

Removing the Second Skin

Wash your hands thoroughly before removing the dressing.

Peel the film away slowly under warm running water to minimise irritation to the skin.

Once Removed

• Gently wash the tattoo using the provided soap
• Use clean hands only
• Pat dry with a clean towel or allow to air dry
• Apply a very thin layer of the provided moisturiser

Do not over moisturise. The skin should feel hydrated, not saturated.

During Healing
For Approximately 2 Weeks

• Keep the tattoo clean
• Moisturise lightly 2 to 3 times daily
• Wear loose clothing where possible
• Avoid friction against the area
• Do not pick, scratch or peel the tattoo

Some dryness, flaking and light itching is completely normal during healing.

For the First 4 Weeks

Avoid:

• Baths or prolonged soaking
• Swimming pools
• The sea
• Saunas or steam rooms
• Direct sunlight

Although the surface may appear healed earlier, the skin beneath is still recovering.

Long Term Care

Once fully healed, always apply SPF 50 when exposing your tattoo to direct sunlight. Proper sun protection is essential for maintaining contrast, detail and longevity over time.
